Long-jawed orb weaver Pachygnatha clercki,

Body length: 6 mm | Studio, 301 exposures

Semi-adult and adult long-jawed orb weavers have long and forward-facing serrated jaws. Amongst spiders, it is not uncommon for the female to eat the male after mating. The male long-jawed orb weaver avoids this by prying the female’s jaws open and locking them. Long-jawed orb weavers are indirect hunters that build webs, trapping the flying insects that pass by. The webs of these spiders are wheel shaped, but unlike orb weavers such as the cross spider, the long-jawed orb weaver leaves the center of its webs open.
